The “no one is illegal on stolen land, California was once part of Mexico “ is so dumb, tbh. No one is arguing the Russian invasion of Ukraine is justified bc Ukraine was part of Russia for several hundred years

It’s not stolen land anymore if Chicanos are in the protests too

I have had plenty of arguments with conservatives that make the point that Ukraine was once a part of Russia (USSR).

Unfortunately there are plenty of incomprehensibly ignorant people arguing that the Russian invasion is justified, with the reason you stated being one of their claims. Now, obviously it’s a worthless argument that no serious person entertains, but plenty still try and make it

I mean, it’s true tho. Ukraine has been independent from Russia for less than 40 years, while California has been part of the US for damn near 200 years. Russia has more of a claim to Ukraine than Mexico does to any of its former territory in the US, yet no one is calling Russia’s invasion of Ukraine justified

When Conservatives had their whole anti-Ukraine arc after the drama between Trump and Zelensky when Trump was slobbering all over Putin, they sure were trying to justify Russia’s invasion…

And by the same token, you could have also justified every single territory grab by the Nazi’s as “just taking back what rightfully belongs to Germany”

I think I see some validity to OPs point but I would argue that the situation isn’t exactly the same as arguably Ukraine (as a people) choose to leave the USSR while Mexicans were pushed out via a war. The people who live in Ukraine haven’t gone anywhere so there is no “theft” of land. Culturally the Ukrainian people have long existed as a people whose lived there for a very long time and choose to self-govern

For those curious about the Russian claims to Ukraine, this article sheds some light on Russian propaganda and lies regarding Ukraine “belonging” to Russia. https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/lseih/2020/07/01/there-is-no-ukraine-fact-checking-the-kremlins-version-of-ukrainian-history/

Ukraine has been independent from the Soviet Union for 40 years, not Russia. The Soviet Union was a collection of republics who, though dominated by Russia as the largest and most powerful republic, did not “belong” to Russia. Ukraine and Russia were both republics of the USSR

And Ukraine was part of the Russian Empire for about 150 years prior to the Soviet Union, too

And before that was Kievan Rus, and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and the Mongol Empire, and so on and so forth. We can play this game lmao

Again as stated earlier, the Ukraine was never “taken” or stolen by anyone. The people who have always lived there simply chose to govern themselves rather than be part of Russia/the USSR

I’m not justifying the war in Ukraine, just pointing out how the “stolen land”argument is pretty dumb. Every piece of land is by definition “stolen”, unless you lived in like Ethiopia or some place where humanity originated and your ancestors never left that general area

You’re not fully wrong but also not fully right. The concept that land can be stolen also implies the idea that land belongs to a people because their cultural group was there first which doesn’t seem exactly right either. That doesn’t change that a wrong doing in the near past affects people today. Perhaps is stupid to say it was stolen but it also isn’t untrue to say as it was taken out of conquest
