Republicans didn’t even originally fight to free the slaves. It was to stop slavery from spreading. But as punishment Lincoln passed the emancipation proclamation which only freed slaves in rebelling states and then later the 13th amendment to free slaves that we’re still in the union as Lincoln allowed states like Maryland and Tennessee to keep slaves during the war
