I’m eaten up by guilt knowing that I have everything, and so many people around me have nothing. I see how my parents act towards the poor, or even many minorities, and I’m filled with disgust. How can you see someone else suffering and willingly turn your head, knowing that you will do nothing to help them even though you have the power? (2/2)

Make a commitment that, when you inherit, you’ll donate all of the wealth over a certain level - say, 100 million dollars. Your standard of living doesn’t need to change

My family’s in the top 1% of earners, so not exactly the same thing - we don’t have yachts or five megamansions or anything like that - but I felt the same way you do, and committing to do my best for the common good has worked out for me

You can give your wealth away while also not feeling guilty. It’s not your fault, so why are you guilty? You can have empathy for people who can’t afford your lifestyle without feeling guilty. If getting that wealthy was easy, everyone would do it. That is reason to be proud of your family

Thank you, this is really helpful :) when I said 1% I was referring to top 1% household income so I think we’re quite similar, and I feel better knowing there are other people who feel the same and that I can make a difference
