Urgent question! Can I drive my 2006 Honda crv with a little too much oil in it? Itโ€™s measuring about 20mm over the top dot when the engine has been cold for a while ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™

Mechanic here. You'll be fine. They're engineered to run a little over and it'll run cold longer because there's more to warm up. That could also do with outside temperature.

Just drink the oil off the top

Thanks! Do you happen to know if idling intermittently would be a bad idea? And I saw somewhere online that an indicator may go off if oil pressure does become a problem, is that true? If not, I suppose Iโ€™d just look for smoke to see if a problem did arise?

Yeah if oil pressure rises too high there will be an indicator that goes off. Idling is actually one of the safest things for your car to do cuz it's not under much load at all. Watch for smoke and a burning smell. Other than that you should be fine.

If you have a Jack and some stands I would personally drain some of the oil. Depending on what car you drive it could potentially be an issue. Again it really depends how big your engine is. I'm assuming you did your own oil change. You could always take it into a shop and ask them to drain some.

I guess tell me what you drive so I can accurately assess

Ok word, itโ€™s a 2.6 L 4 cylinder in a 2006 Honda crv. It burns or leaks oil so Iโ€™m just hoping itโ€™ll be something that fixes itself. Wanting to record some music so I just need the car to idle a bit tn to keep the battery charged, Iโ€™ll give it a better look/drain some tomorrow if need me

So essentially your capacity in your pan is around 5L of oil. An extra 20mm in the pan is about 2L overfill. In your case that's really bad. What happens when you overfill oil is that it gets aerated like a fish tank and tiny bubbles cause it to almost stop working. It needs drained very badly. It's an easy fix either way just a simple mistake everyone makes.

I wanted to know because your pan capacity is a big deal. If it was like a 6L V8 you wouldn't be nearly as screwed for example.

Some advice for idling your car just don't idle in an enclosed space because it could create gases that are toxic when you open the door to the space you could kill yourself basically so.

I am not an amazing home mechanic but I have seen enough horror movies to know that one lmao ๐Ÿ˜… headed to a parking lot instead

Also just checked again and itโ€™s much lower than I thought, more like 3/5ish mm. So I think Iโ€™m chillin for tn at least
