I fear we cannot end capitalism anymore, maybe if we started a few decades ago. But if we end capitalism, not saying I’m against it, I’m for it, but do you know what we’d have to lose? Imagine telling people fast food restaurants are over with, that your ability to buy fast fashion in dunzo, it has to end a shit ton of luxury—no more free vacation to South Asia, or South America, no cruises. Bc those products and services are antithetical to socialist values and goals. They’d have to change.
I think yall are disagreeing on semantics more than anything else. The nordics show that we can adopt socialist leaning policies under capitalism and achieve some of the benefits of communism while still existing under capitalism. It’s minuscule compared to the changes brought by a transition to full communism but still better than where we are now
also, no that “vacation” is “free” monetarily wise rn, but your free ability to travel there when you want if you had the money wouldn’t exist. And a lot of poor people have jobs in capitalism, not that they wouldn’t in socialist nations, but we’d have to be a far more trained and education society to efficiently transition.
do you know what we have to gain? currently only those who can afford those luxuries enjoy them. the vast majority of us are not going on vacations out of this nation if we’re even able to afford a vacation at all. for the vast majority, socialism means stability at the very least, and sustainability at its best. capitalism firstly is unsustainable because of its inherent contradictions. it lends itself to imperialism and war, and ecocide and genocide
if we do not alter the economic system, we risk civilizational collapse, through war and ecological crisis. those luxuries will no longer matter when the crops we consume for food can no longer grow. capitalism is exhausting the soil, destroying the remaining forests, depleting and polluting our water tables, and is quickly heating this planet. we will not be able to sustain ourselves if capitalists are not quickly removed from their role as central planners over the economy
Try telling your white middle class friends in college you think their entire way of life needs to be shut down. It’s not gonna get support. That’s my fucking take. I think you need to actually see how much of those luxuries you already rely and enjoy, and you might support their destruction, but if you’ve ever relied on fast food to eat, or bought clothes from a mass production chain, or if you have non biodegradable plastics, you probably have fidgets and stuffed animals, you’re also part ofit
many people do not eat out for every meal, many people purchase second-hand or have access to hand me downs, and many people do not go to the Bahamas or Disney World to vacation. for someone screaming about people being out of touch with reality, your reality is confined to that of a white “middle-class” suburbanite, who is ignoring that people already live less wasteful and less luxurious lives, not by choice, but because poverty forces them to. those people have a world to gain
