Tbf the parties didn’t switch in the 1960s over a single election cycle. They slowly shifted issue by issue, group by group, from roughly 1900-1980. It was messy and uneven. The Midwest and Pacific KKK had more Republicans than Democrats in the 20s.I mean the core reason was still slavery. A lot of the soldiers may have been loyal to their states, which were fighting for the plantation elite. Or they were scared that black people being free would endanger them. There’s a reason the southern Appalachians were a bastion of union support. That’s where there weren’t many slaves.
