Tbf the parties didn’t switch in the 1960s over a single election cycle. They slowly shifted issue by issue, group by group, from roughly 1900-1980. It was messy and uneven. The Midwest and Pacific KKK had more Republicans than Democrats in the 20s.

I mean the core reason was still slavery. A lot of the soldiers may have been loyal to their states, which were fighting for the plantation elite. Or they were scared that black people being free would endanger them. There’s a reason the southern Appalachians were a bastion of union support. That’s where there weren’t many slaves.

It isn’t dishonest to say that slavery was one issue of many to start a war. The caveat OP made about individual motivation is an honest thing to explore in history and historiography.

For instance, slavery explains why the southern elites wanted the war. It doesn’t explain why a Mississippi farmer who didn’t own shoes wanted it. Or why a farmer from Maine went down there to fight.

Which is a reasonable take. I’m pointing to the fact that most people just project the interests of the southern ruling class on to every soldier that fought, which is obviously wrong.

What’s dishonest or ahistorical is chuds I met at college who defend a stars and bars wallet as the war was only about states’ rights. That’s not OP’s position here. I’m contrasting what’s an honest approach to history and what’s an absence of historical understanding.
