yeah no it’s really bad that we can’t talk across the aisle or even have thanksgiving in peace but i don’t think it’s possible to fix without decreasing radicalism, it’s a symptom not a cause. but then the issue becomes that the separation feeds into anti-immigration tribalism so it’s just a mess and idk what to do about it. we can’t just be nice to the evil people in our lives but the longer the polarization goes the worse it gets in a feedback loop from hell
Exactly. As for me personally, I am not exactly part of the feedback group because I’m not even culturally American despite living here and having some American family. I grew up in east Asia, so I’m used to almost 0 public disorder. That said I can talk across the aisle. Or maybe it’s just that I’m cold enough to do so since I have ties on both sides and I am very pragmatic. My point is that basically American culture dug its own grave
But as for the evil people, I assume you’re speaking from a position of your own opinion however it is in my view there is no such thing as a good person. There are a lot of things that I disagree with, but it is better to be shrewd about it. After all, I was taught to smile to one’s face then stab them in the back if necessary.
i don’t think anyone is really a “good person” either and if someone has never done wrong it’s probably bc they never had the power to do so and get away with it. that being said some bad decisions are a lesser evil and others are actively malicious and the people ripping up the constitution and violating human rights are definitely worth differentiating in terms of who i will associate with. in fairness i do still talk to them & try to get them to open up to me but i understand why some don’t
Simple human psychology. As far as I know, you’re culturally American, which means you probably belong to one side or another most likely so the opposing side, most likely conservatives won’t listen to you because you present as culturally liberal. In my case, I present as culturally Chinese and Japanese because that’s my heritage so therefore, I don’t trip the same triggers that most Americans might with the opposite side.
