Socialism absolutely works more smoothly in homogenous societies without deep group disparities. In diverse societies, redistribution breeds resentment amongst higher-performing groups, exacerbating racial tensions and resulting in unequal/imbalanced government subsidies. Your dad is very wise.

Before the obligatory “USSR fell” comment, the USSR had a lot of shortcomings and failures, but socialist policy wasn’t one of them. The union lasted over 70 years which featured the greatest level of prosperity most of the republics had ever seen before or since
