Good guy Tacoma: Sending out speed camera violations by lottery, since 77% of drivers are “speeding” Now maybe do a speed study and set the limit to where 85% of drivers feel comfortable

Wow, a city limiting its revenue making potential in the name of not financially burdening as many citizens as possible. Shocking.

Speed limits are usually set really badly. The US used to set speed by taking average speed of cars and then 76% of that is the speed limit. This means we get roads that are literally built for speeding. If you want people to go slower and make streets ACTUALLY safer, you need to design streets to be narrower, maybe made of brick, have speed bumps, have more trees closer to the street, etc. those things systemically and infrastructurally change the natural speed drivers go and feel safe driving

Just watch a video about it. The real story is that the company that operates the cameras charges the city $4 upfront to process each violation, and Tacoma didn’t have an extra $1,600,000 lying around

Just more evidence that no one bothered with a traffic study first to even estimate how much they’d have to front just to mail the tickets
