something that i’m not sure people are aware is that our economy doesn’t work without war. like we have geared the entire economy to paying itself through government programs that aren’t fully funded by the taxes we collect.

Believe it or not there is an opportunity cost to defense spending.

that’s kind of the whole problem… What exactly r u trying to say ? what do you think opportunity cost means ?

Basically the money allocated to defense spending could go to something else and aggregate demand remains relatively unchanged.

Aggregate demand would probably be better in the long run as well

yeah i’m not arguing that, i agree with u and that wasn’t the point of the post. I’m saying that this IS the way the economy is set up, and it’s created such an incestuous relationship with money printing, defense contracts, and foriegn debt, that i don’t know how we uncouple it without total gdp collapse. not arguing to keep it, just stating reality.

I agree it’s incestuous but that’s kind of the nature of defense contractors. But to sit here and claim that the US economy is reliant on war is frankly absurd.

you haven’t really given an argument for why it’s not, you just said what else we could be spending on, which i agree, but if we stopped even a half of our defense contracts/ spending it would be a 5-10% gdp drop minimum if not more.

As with literally any industry in the US. Not to mention war and defense spending are not the same thing. When I think of “entire economy dedicated to war” I am thinking of Russia as like barely (if even) reaching that bar.

you still haven’t actually given a reason as to why we aren’t tho; and OPs point could be expanded upon from war to imperialism imo, because we utilize our military and economy to exploit other nations whether we’re at war with them or not. not sure why you’re sitting here acting as if war isn’t a fundamental pillar of this nation

Fine I concede the argument that the US economy is geared towards war but in a way where it is also more geared towards healthcare, tech, agriculture and finance. Paradoxically the economy geared towards war does not require a war to be happening nor is differs much economies (OP would likely say) are not geared towards war. If OP says those countries are geared for war then all countries are geared for war and OPs claim is essentially meaningless.
