that free food is still paid for. It’s just that the government will be buying it, not individual people or it would be a system like food stamps and people would buy the eggs with preallocated money neither of these would affect supply and demand to a large degree

Let’s say you are a farmer who sells eggs, if everyone has free food, then that means nobody is buying your eggs, and you are losing money. To stop this you need to incentivize people to buy more eggs, and the only method you have to do this is to lower the prices of eggs.
