If I was running for president, ending the death penalty would be one of my top signature issues. We execute lots of innocent people by mistake, and its not even more cost efficient.

i wouldn’t make that the top prison issue to run on, it’s not a winning issue, and furthermore there are things that should be done first imo. instead you should change it to 3 things. ban privatization of prisons like #2 said, increase treatment and rehabilitation, and abolish mandatory minimum sentences

How about changing the requirement for conviction to “with absolute certainty” rather than beyond a reasonable doubt. This will enable it for those who shoot up a school for example still be educated. I could also support requirements for greater public defense support than typical cases.

Can’t change the state death penalty though which is where most executions happen.

I think it should be kept but I think the standard for evidence in death penalty cases needs to be even higher. Clear camera footage, DNA evidence, personal items left at the scene, etc. Not circumstantial evidence or eyewitness hearsay. I also think the death penalty should be given out soon after the verdict instead of spending years on death row. I also believe the death penalty should be the mandatory punishment for anyone convicted of child sex crimes.

The way to ensure a higher standard is through a higher conviction threshold tho. I fully agree that the appeals process needs to be heavily reduced tho
