My great grandparents immigrated from Ireland and slipped the O’ out of their name to seem less Irish. It happened ALL the time back then. Do you think changing your name would EVER fly today??

I know Italians that changed the spelling and pronunciations of their last names so it wouldn’t appear Italian to the American public. e.g. D’Angelo -> Dangelo (pronounced like Dan). The ticket clerks basically wrote down whatever you told them and Ellis Island read off the manifests the ships provided
