Potential hot take, but I think people like this are genuinely mentally ill (not oop, the people in their story) Like past a point this isn’t politics, it’s psychosis. Idk, something like “religiously induced psychosis” is a good placeholder

Yes on both fronts, however I will say it’s an issue especially with right wing evangelicals. Like you don’t see mega churches praying to Biden or ai generated images of angels saving obama posted to facebook

it presents much differently depending on whether the person is already traditionally religious or not, on the right you get pastors acting like trump is jesus and on the left you get dogmatic ideological puritans (like think 2016 tumblr)

yeah definitely, I’m mainly using those as particular examples. people just tend to apply the same behavior and schema to politics today that they did to religion when religious was ubiquitous with society and it’s caused by the same psychology. took a class about general human religious behavior and the parallels are pretty crazy, been adding to a personal essay about it over the past few years and might finish and release it at some point if I stop procrastinating
