To be fair Italian American identity died in 1963. When Joe Valachi rated about organized crime. Irish American culture died with the Good Friday Agreement

Because my ancestors figured it out. They assimilated. I’m assimilated. New immigrants have family from where they came from. My family has no contact or connection anymore with Ireland or Germany. I don’t qualify for citizenship there at all. I have no where to go if this place changes in a way that is bad for me and my family. This is why I and others like me identify as white Americans. We’re not Europeans anymore, we are Americans and that’s all we are.

You entirely missed the point. The adoption of an American identity is something that takes generations. Also Italians and the Irish didn’t fully assimilate or else you wouldn’t see the distinct aspects of their culture. Your ancestors were not seen as Americans by Americans back then just as many modern day immigrants aren’t seen as Americans.

TLDR it’s hypocritical to be anti-immigration as an Italian American or Irish American. Sorry not sorry.

You do realize you can assimilate into a society and still retain your ethnic culture right?

Who is considered “assimilated” says more about the receiving country’s society than about the immigrants themselves.
