it’s a matter of misdirection. people know their material conditions are bad, the party then puts the blame on cultural out groups to distract from the reality that the cause of this is the ruling class and our current political and economic system. one gives you a tangible enemy to fight and the other tasks you with dismantling and rebuilding an entire system

it’s wildly easy to become influenced by fascist rhetoric when you are a part of the in group (i’m personally thinking of the third wave experiment from 1967). i think when we think of working class trump voters we should remember that they have been systemically screwed over. not because they’re white or christian or men or whatever but because they’re working class. it’s an ideological slight of hand

i’m not sure why you’re explaining all this to me. I’m well aware, that side of hand only works on people with room temperature IQs. That’s my whole point and you haven’t really given me any reason to not believe it

i don’t subscribe to iq especially not in this instance as i don’t believe that this group is fundamentally inferior to me or are incapable of change. it fails to take into account our education system and years of propaganda and the ways they’ve been woven into the fabric of our culture. it is much more comforting to believe that the american dream has been stolen from you than come to the understanding that it never really existed the way you thought

it doesn’t have to be IQ specifically just intelligence in general. Holding beliefs because they’re comforting without willing to challenge them or even educate yourself on them is just something that people with low intelligence do.

youre still naming some sort of fundamental difference. look man, do you think this approach will actually get anyone to change? or will it cement their beliefs that the world is out to get them? or might it be more effective to find common ground and go from there?

what do u mean “naming some fundamental difference” and i don’t care about changing peoples minds on here, if you haven’t noticed, it’s mostly left leaning people and the few republicans that are on here aren’t willing to have an honest conversation. You can call it venting or just a reason for me to argue, but soft words and solidarity aren’t what i’m here to push.

i was referring to the intelligence thing. i get wanting to vent and argue, hell i obviously do it a lot. that said i also think it’s worth stepping back and examining your own beliefs so that you can have a more effective praxis

for context at least, i’m from the south, part of a group that gets pointed to as, by nature, stupid hicks. i work with groups that are seen in a similar way. for me i have to challenge the idea that any one group is inherently one thing or another without examining the structural frameworks that might have put them there
