Trying to get educated. I understand Gerrymandering is bad, why don’t we just get rid of the idea of districts at all when it comes to bigger elections like for Congress? Why isn’t it just based on the popular vote for that state period?

Because then republicans would get the votes they actually deserve and would stop having control over government which republicans don’t like

Mostly because that’s what the constitution says Senate is based on popular vote for the state. For House, instead of doing proportional representation by state, we separate up districts and do winner take all there

It’s because there’s different regions of those states and they often have different goals and priorities. Think the difference between upstate New York and NYC, or the California central valley and LA, or the Mississippi delta and the Jackson suburbs.

Actually I lied, It is US federal law that says you must have X federal districts for X house reps, and one represented must be *elected from each district* So that law functionally means that proportional representation will not be possible

Lots of states have a mix of Republican and Democrat house representatives. Turning it into winner takes all like the senate would reduce representation for individual regions, and would result in some weird skewing
