Less worried about IEDs in the ground and more about outrunning or quickly bailing from an aerial drone

Get out car fast, car not moving tomb anymore

It’s not replacing the current armored vehicles in service, probably will serve some niche purpose and have no significant role, just a waste of money. Probably boils down to someone in trumps circle getting a good contract deal and making money out of it

so everyone can see their cool outfits during photo ops

The odds that anyone seeing this post has military experience are pretty low, but what I can say is that a drone would still take out that vehicle even if it had doors

No doors = lighter = go fast = outrun drone? Perhaps? Wouldn’t be surprised if that was the logic given the state of current pentagon leadership

Without revealing the specifications of other systems that would allow those in the vehicle to know there are inbound drones. They can exit the vehicle and enter a hard structure for cover or if enough heads up is given, set up countermeasures quicker.

IEDs are even cheaper to make than drones, wouldn’t be that hard to switch back to them

It has the same engine as a Chevrolet colorado, it isn’t outrunning an FPV drone. Artillery shrapnel will easily injure anyone in it. It’s such a waste of money

It’s genuinely a smart idea so vehicles aren’t death traps

It’s meant so they can exit quickly

That‘s assuming attacks on said vehicle are survivable though… If no one is left alive, then rapid evacuation is kinda useless.

I don’t think you’ve seen what the no mans land looks like, it’s literally nothing but drones and the occasional artillery strike your not subjected to lots of small arms fire

When did I say small arms fire anywhere? It’s arguably much worse if it gets hit with a drone than small arms fire depending on the payload.

So that’s why is has no doors!

Ok I see what you mean. That assumes detection is good enough and provides sufficient time. If it does, bailing isn’t terrible and can be a good option. If it doesn’t, the passengers are riddled with shrapnel at neck height. I think where we differ is in how much trust you put in EW or early warning systems to either prevent a drone from coming into range or give sufficient notice and high enough quality info to be able to actually utilize to the extent it can increase relative safety.

You also run the risk of armored vehicles just being giant spawling cans with drones. We aren’t going to make depleted uranium reactive armor for every troop movement. So it’s like… do I trust ISR is good enough to call out potential small arms threats before I find myself in range. Eh, soft yes. Would I rather my vehicle be off road capable to keep small arms threats at a distance to traverse around a non-permissive city/town. Definitely. If a drone swarm is coming, it’s coming from a distance.

Or if it’s ones and twos of drones, can I hard point in a building/behind/under natural cover in time for countermeasures to be deployed for intercept.

With current optics… the ability to drive around a city like Qayarrah in an off road light skin vehicle, off any known route where they would normally place an IED, even if they had drones (ISIS just started with the “drops a grenade”) models. Would have been preferable to rolling armored straight through the town center every time we had to go to Mosul.

Gives you the option of “oh look a checkpoint, think I’ll just make a big loop around that and not go anywhere near God only knows what faction is manning it today.”
