I was in the chat. It’s mostly dark humor shit. Nothing to be taken seriously. I can look for old screenshots later. But if you have a bunch of college boys regardless of the political affiliation or subject of the group they’re gonna say dumb shit to be funny. I’m in some nba and fantasy football group chats and same thing. It’s just something boys lol
I agree with you on the overall message, but it’s a lot less clear in proper historical context. Look at eugenics for example, on paper it was a cutting edge and progressive idea that humans can be perfected with Darwin’s theory of evolution. In reality, legislation was a mess of conservative Democrats targeting minorities. It’s similar to today’s confusion between antizionism and antisemitism, where one group has justified criticisms and other groups hijack the message to push hateful rhetoric
Then there’s also the party flip misconception. It’s better to describe it as the waves of party shifts. Currently we’re either in the 6th party shift of Neoliberal vs Neoconservative, but a case can be made for being in the 7th party shift of populism. The 3rd party shift is what eventually kicked off the Civil War and saw conservative Democrats and progressive Republicans. The 4th party shift was the above eugenics point of blurred lines.
And the 5th party shift shaped modern politics. It stemmed from FDR’s focus on social programs. Since they were so popular, both parties modeled domestic policy after FDR. There were distinct lines at social equality, which is where we see the “party swap” come in. However, 5th party shift Democrats made the mistake of compromising with desegregation. Civil Rights was led by the people, and we’re seeing 6th party Democrats finally fully aligning with that.
