The right gives external explanations that justify cruelty toward women. The left gives external explanations that demand solidarity with women. If one side is more popular, that’s a statement of the right’s character, not the palatability of leftism.

You’re not wrong at all about the character, but we also always seem to forget on the left (our standard establishment libs in particular) that you need to actually say popular things to win elections. Telling men they’re all privileged and need to take a back seat simply isn’t ever going to get you the majority of the male vote. There’s truth within the message, but we need to be smarter about how it’s being received

You can absolutely have feminist-informed leftism in a way that doesn’t produce a reaction like this on this scale

Hard disagree. Removal of privilege is always met with backlash.

What you’re missing is that these younger incel-type working class conservative men don’t *feel* privileged in the slightest. We’re never going to overcome patriarchy while it remains baked into our economic system particularly for the 1%, and we’re never going to change the economic system without converting some of these people. You have to come at them with class solidarity language first, the equality is ingrained within the whole philosophy

At risk of sounding like my own natural predator, when a person’s feelings are completely opposed to reality the solution isn’t to validate that but to bring them back into sync with the real world, is it not?

Sure, but has the current approach resulted in that? Or has it resulted in two Trump administrations along with more and more increasingly isolated and echo-chambered, resentful young men who get funneled into right wing extremism? And male privilege is still a very real problem, but many of these individuals truly don’t experience it meaningfully, they have very few prospects in life. It’s increasingly a patriarchy of the 1%, which is who it has served most all along

I think you’re being a little disingenuous. I didn’t say that we’ve been effective at correcting them lately, I said that should be our goal rather than validating the very errors leading them deeper into fascism (which is what you advocated). Furthermore, the left is not to blame for the prevalence of misogyny on the right, which is what you seem to be indicating in this most recent comment.

I think you misunderstand me, I’m not saying the left is to blame for misogyny at all, of course it’s not; I’m saying that for whatever reason, it’s pretty clearly failing to catch many young men who are in a precarious position with their beliefs. Most people don’t just become a raging misogynist incel overnight, they start off broadly disillusioned with their own personal situation and get gradually pulled down a rabbit hole and radicalized.

Young people in general, men and women alike, do have very good reason to be generally disillusioned by their circumstances at the moment, and it *is* on us on the left to be making our point in a way that is reaching these people and being received as more convincing than the alternative, because it genuinely is better for all of us

I would never suggest compromising our core values to gain voters or anything like that, but that doesn’t mean we couldn’t be doing better at meeting young men where they are, those in the early stages at least, and explaining why our way is really better for them, too
