always find it funny when country fans find out a modern country musician is progressive when the entire highwayman discography is filled with protest songs, especially their live stuff. like who the fuck do you think inspired them? lol

I saw Willie Nelson this summer, and he opened with the song “livin’ in the promised land”. It was great.

I don’t listen to modern country that much, can you give me some examples of modern progressive artists?

Did you see him with Bob Dylan?

they’re also the ones that tend to honor the country tradition too…the conservative ones make the poppy, nashville shit, if that tells you what’s selling right now😔

Ayyy I’ve seen Siera live fuck yeah. A friend of mine has recommended Childers, Isbell, and Simpson but I just haven’t listened yet.

Yeah, songs like “courtesy of the red white and blue” not only aren’t true to country, they’re the opposite of what it stands for. It’s like writing a folk song about how workers should be paid less and work longer in worse conditions.

i’ve also sierra live a few times! she’s my wife but doesn’t know it yet… definitely check them out and i also can’t recommend billy strings enough. i’ve seen him 18 times lol. i think he makes the most accessible bluegrass music ever, considering how gatekept that genre is. he also has a song called wargasm that’s one of the better protest songs of our generation imo.

I was so far away I couldn’t see him that well, but yeah, he’s always hit or miss, and that goes for his discography as well. People thought he was washed, and then BOOM! Blood on the Tracks.

i was far away too, but still could tell he had more energy and the band was just really great that night. and see…i think his stuff from ‘67-76 might be his best lol the cover albums are obviously misses, but his originals in that timeframe kicked so much ass and suited his voice so well.

When I went to go see her she had a really good opener, Nick Shoulders I think. I went in completely blind (my friends said they had tickets but needed a third person cause the other guy flaked) and was pleasantly surprised by both.

This is probably the best 3 album run of all time. But then he released Self Portrait, New Morning, Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid, Dylan, and Planet Waves. They had a couple hits across them, but overall not that good. And then perhaps his best album all of the sudden, a genuine no-skip album, Blood on the Tracks.

while i love his rock period, i fuck with john wesley harding, nashville skyline, and new morning harder than almost anything else he ever made, except probably freewheelin’.

When she does the high pitched thing where she just kinda holds a long “wooooo” it’s so good. I wish I could remember the song cause I know that’s not descriptive but vocally she was amazing live. We were in a medium sized bar room setting and it was so good. Her voice echoed throughout the whole building.

i think the fact that we are debating this just speaks to how amazing of a musician the man is

yeah like i said, i don’t care for the cover albums, but i think the original albums in that period get a bad wrap. he sounded his best as far as singing goes imo, it was a sound that suited him so well. it took us a while to get them, but the basement tapes were also recorded in that time, which is one of my favorite projects of all time.

i also think he quit smoking for a few years there, which may also contribute so his singing being much better in that period
