Supporting HRT bans should have been a red line Funding ICE should have been a red line Genocide should be a red line You can't rely on "but they are less evil" forever because that will only lead to the dems shifting more right every election cycle

Hell, the whole “trans people in sports” shit should have been a red line. There’s a reason they’re called wedge issues, and the dems were enthusiastic about letting the conservatives put that wedge in.

The trans stuff pisses me off so bad because not only does it severely impact such a small portion of the population (meaning it should be a non issue to the GOP), but it actually severely impacts a lot of cis people. Older men losing their hair and muscle mass, older women going through menopause, pre teens with late or early puberty, women with PCOS, it has such a wider reach than they care to understand.

I mean I agree with you in principle but genuinely what is our other option (that would actually win) under our current voting system? People don’t vote for them out of some belief that they’ll suddenly change their ways. They vote for them because it’s at least SOMETHING to at minimum slow the republicans down slightly. If we had proportional representation and ranked choice voting god knows I’d never vote for them again but as for right now it’s kind of the only thing that will succeed broadly

If I could encourage any broad, sincere effort for change. And I’m not being flippant here. Teaching people how to read would be a way forward. Because so much of my greatest in-person ideological friction with people is their indifference to reading credible evidence put in front of them.

Especially because it has never been about trans people in sports. Just like segregation was never about water fountains or how homophobia was never about spreading HIV Capitulation to trans people in sports is giving credence to a bad faith way fascists use for getting their foot in the door

Even conservative PACs are pulling back from the transphobia stuff now, they realize it’s a losing talking point but the dems are just so eager to throw their base under the bus to win elections that they’re becoming diet republicans. If you become your enemy in order to beat him, that’s not victory, it’s defeat.

The truth is many dems see transgender equality as an inconvenience they have to work around rather than something to fight for. They don’t have values (besides funding Israel at all costs) and would instead rather run on what their internal polls say will get them elected instead of having any conviction. This is partly why people say we have two right wing parties, because there’s no meaningful difference between a right wing party and a party willing to go rightward

I don’t disagree, but I do think it’s important to realize that they won’t attack cis people for undergoing hormone therapy. The military is giving away testosterone injections ffs. It’s just about selectively targeting trans people with the laws they want to put forward. Guaranteed if a total HRT ban happened cops would look the other way at cis people using them

Right, it wouldn’t be a direct attack, but I’m sure there would be trickle down effects like insurance not covering it, supplies becoming more limited, doctors being too afraid to prescribe it, etc. because based on how they’re handling elective abortion bans, they’re too reckless and short sighted to really think through legislative language

Oh 100%. Like I said, I don’t disagree. I just think it’s important to center the conversation on who will be hurt the most - which is undoubtedly trans people. Lots of us need hormones to survive, there’s a reason the phrase “death before detransition” is common in trans circles

To be fair, they do also have the value of protecting capital at all costs as well as the age old “will of the donors”

Yeah both parties ultimately exist in their current forms to protect the will of capital. That comes before anything else

And like I’m also trans this is very much personal to me. But I don’t think voting third party or not voting at all is gonna help us. The best thing we can do is primary the shit out of them to try and get the most progressive people the nominations while also working on the ground in our communities

I speak here as another trans person. I think the core part of your statement here is “under our current voting system”. If we take stock of the situation, conservatives have drummed up a large amount of hatred for us in the everyday person (or at least more than previously) and the liberals are beginning to abandon us (we are not electorally viable to advocate for if they want to reach the “moderate” voter). This puts us in a bind if we stick to the purely electoral position.

We must address the root causes of our oppression. Specifically, I ask this question: is there any world where equality can be reached for trans people in a system that necessitates inequality (capitalism)? I don’t think so. Voting is good for preventing the worse guy from getting into office: however, to address the system which reproduces and mediates our oppression (and the oppression of others), we must turn to Marxism.

I am in favor of harm reduction! Candidates like El-Sayed, Talarico, or other similar people - while still capitalist and imperfect - will at least slow down the onslaught of attacks. But I think there has to be some standard we hold candidates to. In the long run, that’s how we get stronger ones. By showing people will turn out for ones with spines. Fundamentally I don’t think there is a meaningful difference between a republican and a dem willing to compromise everything to appease republicans

Like if John Moderate sees that the dem party is no longer welcoming to him as he stands currently, then he will either think twice about running or have to become John Social-Dem instead. And I don’t love social democrats, but they’re easily preferred to centrists with noodle spines

Yeah fundamentally true equality for trans people cannot happen under capitalism. Our healthcare costs, our higher likelihood to be in poverty, and so much more stems from capitalism We can try and minimize that in our current system, and I think we should, but you can’t minimize shit when the candidates are willing to throw trans people under the bus. Marxism is the path towards true equality for trans people, but if we can vote and get 50% of the way there, that’s better than rn

I agree that reducing harm within the current voting system is the best play. However, just voting will only delay the inevitable. The reason i say this is as follows: under capitalism, the economy erupts in periodic crisis. When in crisis, a section of society tends to lurch towards conservatism—they conflate the ideological values with the standard of living. Abuses against us are thus both inevitable and tied to aspects of the system which cannot be reformed…

…I say this as someone who has voted. Voting is necessary to slow the descent into fascism, but cannot prevent it. We must proceed under the historical materialist framework of Marxism; we must organize a proletarian party and dethrone the bourgeoisie in revolution

Anonymous replying to -> #4 12h

Yeah, I agree with that entirely, I hope I made that clear enough! It is just delaying the inevitable. But I think we can walk and chew gum at the same time. We can focus on both the short term and long term In the end I think America has been perma-fucked. The ship is sinking and we’re going down fast. But at least momentarily I think that having people in power who aren’t trying to kick down groups trying to flee the ship is ideal. In the end, the only way to stop us from drowning is Marxism

There around 110,000 journalist/news organizations in the US. About 17% of the world total. And somehow my dad still tunes into Fox News. And berates me for needing 10 years of economics training to convey inflation to him. So teaching about fact-checking is a second step.
