Worth mentioning that this isn’t an equivalent phenomenon across the political spectrum. The right is indeed creating culture war problems to distract from income inequality but the people hurt by the government’s responses to those invented problems (trans people, immigrants, academics…etc) don’t get to brush it off as a distraction, they need to expend time and energy defending themselves.
