Hot take: arguing about politics with someone is stupid unless the reason you’re both voting the way you do is from a position of self interest or compassion.

This is why I love talking about politics with my conservative ex-college roommate, our personalities are deeply similar other than the fact that he grew up a rural conservative, and I grew up in a big city and am more liberal, so it’s easy to listen and understand each other and all that

I’m confused, what other reason would one have for voting a certain way?

There’s not. I just mean everyone primarily focuses on one or the other when voting and if you’re in opposite camps you won’t get anywhere

Him and I are both deeply compassionate people who respect people different from ourselves, but I’ve grown up seeing lots of people different from me, and he hasn’t. He’s not bigoted in any way, he was just raised as a Republican, but he’s also like “Idk why they focus on the trans thing so much, it’s not that big a deal” which is what makes his conservatism palatable to me

Him and I recognize each other as good people who both have a good heart in our chests, albeit different views from different upbringings, it’s City Mouse/Country Mouse but we like each other and that makes the conversation so much more productive than any I’ve ever had on the internet.
