Iran says it’s gonna close the Strait of Hormuz. Go fill your tank up as soon as you can.

The United States doesn’t rely on Iran for our oil, we’ll be alright in that regard. However it will still have a significant impact on the global economy. The shocks and price raises y’all are thinking of were a consequence of the 1973 embargo, in which the entirety of OPEC joined in to cancel exports to us. As for the Strait, the U.S. Navy would be able to reopen it within a matter of days

Closing the strait absolutely hurts the Iranian economy, but it also makes action against them deeply unpopular in the United States. Americans love their fuckin gas.

Rationale?

They’ve done it before and it caused an absolute crisis in the United States, if they wanna do anything that we’ll feel here at home in response to the bombings, it’ll be closing the Strait.

I'm assuming you're asking me as well, my rationale is that they want to distress America in any way they can as retaliation and if they throw us into a temporary oil crisis and essentially stop America from moving cars around then it will definitely distress the American public into thinking even more that this was a bad call.

They could literally stop America from moving because without gasoline our country isn't capable of achieving anything.

So Trump seems to think that’s not such a good idea for them, any idea why that is?

Iran relies on oil exports for the majority of their economy, and their oil goes through the strait too, so by cutting it off they hurt both the USA and themselves. The question becomes who can stand it longer.

Top officials in Iran probably have enough reserves so it’s a matter of how much they care about their people then correct?

They're hurting their own economy by not allowing ships through, but I don't personally think they care because it's a defense mechanism. It could be a Russia situation where they are ready to essentially close themselves off.

They can justify this kind of action with whatever they choose to. I think their government being in hard power will squash any resistance regardless.

Doesn’t that kind of open an opportunity for Mossad/Israel to do their thing in bringing up Regime change?

It depends how far they're willing to go with it. They already have chinas backing with potential nuclear arms in Iranian territory.

Closing the Strait would cause more harm to Iran and China than it would to the U.S, this isn’t to say it’s a good thing obviously. But here at home, you folks don’t need to worry about your gas prices

That would be further military intervention and may cause China to respond.

China won’t do anything. They have neither the will nor the military capability to project sustained power into the Gulf region, and certainly not at a time when they’re simultaneously trying to focus on Taiwan, India, and the South China Sea. China is an global power in economic, technological and political terms, but in military terms they remain a regional power. They don’t yet possess the sealift capacity for a cross-Strait attack yet.
