ok i hate trump as much as the next person, but can we plz stop with “the deaths were preventable”. it was in the middle of the night and even if sirens went off, flash floods happen so fast it’s insane like yes i’ve experienced one

Its the circumstances leading up to the event thats being criticized. Yes nature is dangerous but its the job of the national weather service and other things that he’s negatively impacted to alert citizens of such conditions and help keep them safe. Think of it like knowing the conditions for a tornado are perfect vs not knowing. If a tornado then touches down who do you think will be safer and more prepared?

The services Trump cut funding for tracked patterns and forecasting for floods like this. They are never 100% preventable but there would have been more warning. Trump DOES have fault in this. A lot of fault. He deemed those services useless and now dozens of children are dead because of it. If those services still had funding the severity of casualties would be much lower.

it’s absolutely fucking horrific and I understand the desire for better alerts, but it was still in the middle of the night. i got a weather radio where the alerts are ungodly loud if something happens, but almost no one has those

Its also the timing as well. Lets say you hypothetically deregulate seat belts being required in cars. Then after that the fatal accidents in your country rise drastically. Its natural people would blame you for that effect

Alerts were sent out throughout the night, that’s my point. There WAS warning, but it is near impossible to predict how severe the flash flood will be.

They knew the conditions and alerts were sent out. It was in the middle of the night and it’s not easy to just know how much water will rise. I’ve been in a flash flood and they said there was a flash flood warning and to move to higher ground, but there was no time frame or depth. It’s a unique and crazy situation

It’s impossible to predict anything when you don’t have funding for weather prediction services

they didn’t miss any weather balloon launches like they had all of the data present. the only thing I can understand is that they have a vacant position for a warning coordinator, but that in itself did not have an impact on the predictions themselves if that makes sense. yes, there needed to be a better way to alert people HOWEVER this is such an insane event that no one really would have thought to prepare for (I know that sounds bad, but it really was that rare)

they could have possibly mis-interpreted the data and not predicted accurately which IS an issue, but they did have the data present. if we realllly wanna get into it, the camp HAD to have known they were in a flood zone and probably didn’t have good enough preparation for an event like this. they didn’t have a real reason to given the rarity, but i’m sure all flood zone areas will get better plans now this is not the first time people have died at the hands of that river flooding.

this is the only map i’ve been able to find which isn’t recent, but I don’t believe there have been any cuts since this (could be wrong). cuts are NOT ok, I guess I am just really trying to express how this event was absolutely unheard of and the people who were at the office did the best they could. alerts could have been better, yes, but hard to know how to really do that
