in the past we have been able to hire seasonals under a 1039 appointment type, which is not to exceed 1039 hours, but this came with extensions under a 24-36 which was we could only work 24 out of 36 months. extensions could be up to 2 months (totaling 8 months). it’s been like this literally forever.

now, it has changed to be 6 out of 12 months, which definitely sucks bc this is a lot of people’s livelihood, it’s very difficult to find a decent paying full time permanent position in conservation. the real kicker is though: everyone hired under the same job series for a single park has the same 6 months, and cannot hire anyone until 6 months after the last person leaves. in the past we’ve been able to stagger start and end times and have people working april-december.

(for context, a job series is like a job title. they can have different position descriptions but the same series, for example i am a biological science technician, i work in wetlands but there are also bio techs working in water quality labs, different job postings but same series)

so the high season is often more than 6 months, meaning not only are natural resources not being managed efficiently but rangers cannot be present for the entire season. in a lot of parks guided hikes should be happening from march-november but that won’t be possible. visitor centers will close. not to mention THIS AFFECTS SEASONAL FIREFIGHTERS
