If banning or restricting guns isn’t the answer, what do you think the actual solution for gun violence is?

Poverty relief, accessible mental health services, a cultural shift towards community and away from individualism, mainstreaming therapy and mental health treatment, getting rid of online radicalization pipelines… so a pipe dream basically

I'm not gonna claim I know perfectly how to solve gun violence, but if gun bans worked, wouldn't they have stopped gun violence in places like Chicago?

And if guns weren't an effective tool to deter crime, how would they stop more crimes than the amount of people killed by guns per year?

Because red states with loose gun laws exist. The gun laws aren't all that effective if you can just hop state or city lines and easily buy a gun

Vast majority of shootings are done with a pistol and the interstate handgun sales ban has been in place for decades

I think gun restrictions are good btw just not going to eliminate violence

So because it's mostly handguns we should do nothing? Also handguns are leading cause of gun violence but assault rifles are the ones mostly used in mass shootings that involve a high number of deaths

If they were actually getting the majority of these weapons the legal way, wouldn't that mean the majority would be rifles? You know, the weapon that you can just walk into a store at 18 and buy? That you can just "hop state or city" and buy?

A lot of them are acquired legally 18 year olds can legally buy rifles and we have no red flag laws either

A) big and hard to carry, B) it is mostly rifles in shooting beacuse they’re planned C) $$$

No it is mostly pistols. If you want to ban handguns that was what was being discussed before the NFA so you're a little late to the party

Yeah I think gun permits should be required mental health evaluations should definitely be done before you can obtain a permit

Most shootings are done with handguns but the mass shootings like the various schools shootings are done with assault rifles

Assault weapons make it far easier to kill more people and are heavily involved in mass shootings. Also while handguns are more prevalent overall they are also pretty goddamn easy to get even for those under 21 due to the gun show loophole. We also have a severe lack of red flag laws or laws similar to that in the country. Weird how our homicide rate via firearms are exponentially higher than other first world nations.

Majority of those homicides happen in areas with gun bans 🤔

Because there's no check when it comes to crossing state lines. It's pretty easy to leave Chicago for say Indiana or Kentucky then come back

Also funny how you ignore all the nations with low firearm homicide rates I wonder what they have in common

Of course that isn't the only problem healthcare and mental health is also at the core of the issue. Our mental health in this country has increased over the past decade

Meanwhile Americans can't afford healthcare and despite being the richest nation we have absurdly expensive healthcare

Yemen doesn't give a lot of data regarding firearm homicides also they're dealing with far larger issues like the Saudis bombing them

America's problem with mental healthcare has risen since the 90s. We have also seen a rise in firearms homicides and mass shootings since the 90s. We also have extremely expensive healthcare that can be very hard to get on a consistent basis or afford especially for those who really need it. The connection is pretty obvious

It's called a connection, the reason for America has high amounts of gun violence compared to other states isn't just a single issues it's extremely nuanced. Something that obviously goes over your head

Is it a mental health issue or a gun issue

Imo they're mutually exclusive, I don't see how it could be both. Either the person who shot the victim is responsible or the gun is responsible

I would go with the former too, if I hit someone with my car on purpose I wouldn't start blaming it on the prevalence of automobiles

Oh so you're just ignorant. America has poor metal healthcare as well as expensive healthcare causing the average American to not be able to afford most health services. This creates a health care crisis which branches off into a mental health crisis. We also have extremely lax gun laws which allows mentally unwell people to easily access firearms. Sometimes these mentally unstable people commit mass shootings.

Lmao sorry if you're mentally unwell but if you can't tell that shooting people with a gun is bad then you should be in a psychiatric institution
