So from mt understanding people who've committed a civil offense deserved to be treated like this, but rapist & sex traffickers, & murderers just get a slap on the wrist....

And all we get is “they should’ve come in legally”. How long will it be until thats the justification for murdering these people?

I don’t think it’s technically illegal to refuse someone access to their Bible (I’ll note that the vast majority of criminals in the United States do have such access), but I think this is likely illegal on cruel and unusual punishment grounds. Not that we’d see any sort of accountability for this in our current administration tho

Well when your in jail/detention or whatever some of your normal rights (like freedom of movement) get suspended so I’m not sure the government is really required to give you a bible. Mabye they should do it but I’m not so sure that’s supported by the law as it’s written

That’s sorta what I’m saying though. I don’t think they’re required to provide a Bible but almost every prison in the country does provide a Bible if requested, just like most also provide some sort of outdoor time and some sort of education…etc. the types of places where that is forbidden are usually high security places for really dangerous people, which is why it seems odd that regular undocumented immigrants aren’t allowed to have one

Everyone in the country is supposed to be free from cruel and unusual punishment though. I think there’s a case to be made that this situation could be considered cruel

the bill of rights article 1 states that there should be no law prohibiting the free exercise of religion, so an american officer stripping someone of their Bible would be against that article

Idk I don’t think it works like that. Freedom of religion is more about civilians being able to worship freely, I don’t think it says anything about prisoners being able to have specific religious books in their cells. Youre free to be a Christian while imprisoned but that doesn’t mean you get to go to worship or have prayer beads in your cell yk? Again I think they should allow bibles absolutely but I just don’t know if this is a constitutionally protected right
