Isn’t the whole thing that corporations are run ruthlessly by shareholders that cut corners wherever possible? If ceos don’t provide value why do the shareholders allow such pay

It’s the ceo. And the reason is to have more money placed in his pocket. The shareholders are okay with this in most cases because they’re either also a CEO, or they don’t care because it doesn’t lower the stock price

I think companies cut corners to make more money for the people at the top of the pyramid. This is both the CEO and shareholders. And it does. Because the money the shareholders earn is based off the evaluation of the company, which isn’t effected negatively by cost cutting and pocket filling, (in fact it’s often the opposite) and the CEO is basically free to suck up all the money as long as that stock price doesn’t go down.
