Maybe #1 is using the traditional Marxian definition of proletariat which is the industrial working class

I’m using the roman definition attached to the original phrase. Proles were a sub-class of plebs: “he who gives nothing to the state but his children.” Marx was a scholar of ancient philosophy and well educated in many aspects of antiquity. He obviously meant to invoke something more specific than “anyone who works a job” with the term.

To Marx society was split between the Bourgeoisie (the owners of businesses, factories, land, etc) and the proletariat (those that worked the fields, the mines, the factories, the offices etc). It’s a less inherently oppressive definition than the original Latin

That’s not accurate. He predicted that the old feudal classes would disappear and be absorbed by those two classes. He never said that only two classes have ever existed. That is an absolutely awful misreading.

You’ve obviously never read Marx. You’re confusing his historical predictions with the claim that only two classes have ever existed (which is absolutely ridiculous). I can show you examples right now of Marx writing about other classes. Do you want me to?

Fewer than 40% of Americans hold a college degree and even fewer have the time and energy to argue about politics on here like we do. You guys are not "proles" or "disenfranchised working-class people" just because you can't afford a house. Chances are you're the children of the bourgeoisie, who just so happen to also hate the top 1%.

Yet we’re here on a politics page on a college chat app. Hence why I’m assuming we’re all working towards degrees. I don’t hate the 1%, I get that total equivalency is untenable. I hate that the system we have makes it possible for the top 1% to own equivalent wealth as the bottom 90% of society. I’m not going to blame people for wanting to maximize their social standing in our current system.
