Like, removing it from transgender issues, Black people went crazy for Black Panther when it hit the theaters. Shit was the highest grossing MCU movie before Infinity War for exactly that reason. Black people were having fun with a Black flagship superhero movie. Then the Academy did some stupid shit, nominated it for Best Picture, and then actually gave it to a White Savior flick. Which I think is a hilarious living metaphor for how “the best ally” types see themselves.
Anyways, BlacKKKlansman should’ve won Best Picture that year, and the weirdest part of that whole situation was not the actual minority group happy to have a movie to take their kids to and see an Avenger that looks like them and isn’t just a white character’s bestie (that’s why Blade didn’t hit the same chord, wasn’t for the family). It was the white people who tried to use that phenomenon for ally points, and had everyone going “I liked Black Panther as much as the next guy, but Best Picture?”
