Hey! I’m just curious, what’s the group consensus on Scouting America? (Previously Scouts BSA previously Boy Scouts of America) They’ve made a bunch of changes to remove the problematic elements and be more inclusive in terms of religion and gender.

It was better before all the changes and I will always refer to them as the BSA. I will acknowledge however, that there were issues with homophobia and pedophilia that needed correction

Im just glad there’s scouting for girls that aren’t centered around being a cookie peddler

as an eagle scout, i think it’s pretty good, my sister is going through it right now and she’s made a lot of friends and is so much better than what she was doing in girl scouts. just went to summit with them a few weeks ago with their boys troop and girls troop and honest to god the only issues we had with scouts came from only the boys only troops

(This is coming from an Eagle Scout looking back on his time in the organization)

I had no issue with them being Christian centered as the organization itself had always been a Christian organization

Yeah. One thing they’ve changed that probably should’ve been done 20 years ago was removing the Native American caricatures from OA events unless they’re working with tribes to ensure it’s all respectful and accurate.

Yeah I can see your point there

As a Christian I agree, but I think the changes they’ve made have made it where you won’t be shamed for NOT being so. I mean, they still have troop chaplains and chaplain aids, with summer camps praying before every meal. So it’s definitely still there, but muted.

i definitely think there should be Christian elements like the chaplains and chaplain aids and prayers but it shouldn’t be too over the top

I’m also an Eagle Scout. Looking back there were some issues but overall a lot of the changes were an over correction

I’m actually conservative but I think it’s a good thing that scouting is more opened up to non-Christians and women now. Although I 100% oppose the new DEI infused content.

The name change I think was a bit much, but I don’t have an issue with all-girl troops. Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts do different things, and there is a massive lack of public interest in their culminating award, unlike the public acclaim of the Eagle Award.

Yeah… that’s 90% of that organization as it looks from my pov. Though, Boy Scouts needs something better to sell as a fundraiser than that crappy overpriced popcorn. My troop went to third-party companies to sell other stuff like beef sticks and set up shop at local events grilling to fundraise what little we got.

That’s why I think it’s good that women are included now. The Boy Scouts is just a better organization overall and provides better opportunities for high adventure.

That’s my thoughts too. I’m really hoping they manage to stabilize the national office budget-wise and they can get back to expanding the program.

Yeah, I don’t think Girl Scout troops do as many outdoor camping and activity events of the type Boy Scouts does.

Yeah, they do need better fundraising. But you’re right, Girl Scouts was 90% cookies and 5% going to a camp with cabins for a long weekend and walking around a lake, and 5% handicrafts. Don’t get me wrong I loved the handicrafts stuff, and I was the top cookie seller every year (over 500 boxes). But I loved doing stuff with my brother’s boyscout troop. Like the actual camping, in a tent, archery, pinewood derby, shooting. Yaknow…scouting.

They do not do outdoor camping or activities at all (at least in my experience)

Yeah, and what I like about Boy Scouts is that (if the leadership do it right) those are tools to teach communication, teamwork, conservation (of the outdoors), and life skills. The mountain climbing or rafting or whatever are just the poster activities to draw 12 year olds in. (Not that they don’t happen, but they happen to teach practical things)

Exactly. It’s part discipline, part skill, part team building, and all fun. Imo at least

I have no issue with girls being in scouts but I think the summer camps and troops should be separate

Troops already are, but summer camps currently aren’t because there simply aren’t enough girl-only troops. Or at least that’s how it was a few years ago before I aged out.
