Now that project Hail Mary is out, I have a new Ryan gosling personality to download, which is nice.

Anyone else bothered by the director tossing physics out the window for a 7 second bit where ships the size of apartment buildings accelerate like they’re f22’s

“He’s literally me”, he says, wearing the jacket from blade runner, the hoodie from Barbie, the mustache from Lars, the gloves from drive, and the glasses from Hail Mary

I mean not really. Partly because it’s a good bit comedically and partly because any engine capable of producing relativistic speeds in a reasonable time has to be unimaginably powerful, so fast acceleration is kind of a given

Hell no it’s not, they have crazy engines not crazy materials to build a ship out of. A ship made out of earthly alloys and composites would immediately break apart if it tried to move like that. Which they played with later when they wanted the structural integrity of the ship to be a plot point and not a bit (during the close orbit of that planet)

Also engines capable of fast transit times for long distances aren’t necessarily the same things as engines capable of unimaginable acceleration. It still takes energy to accelerate massive ships in space.
