Because the leadership of the party has been lying all along. Their only goal is to privatize everything, and retain power so they can keep privatizing everything. Nobody would vote for that, so they use divisive rhetoric to distract from what they actually do. “They’re out to get you, they only care about trans woke immigrants, I’m here for you, they want to take your guns” etc.
