Permitted protest is a great example. You apply for a permit, march the approved route, wrap up by 5, and everyone goes home feeling like they did democracy. The anger gets a release valve and nothing about the system has to change. The aesthetics of dissent get absorbed into the thing being protested. Compare that to the labor strikes and sit-ins that actually won things. They were disruptive by design, and most weren't asking permission.
