Most Americans happily and PROUDLY went along with these personal sacrifices to help beat Germany and alleviate famine in foreign countries. Why did we lose this sense of making social sacrifices for others? My theory is Reaganism.definitely the rise of individualism and entitlement. people don’t want to do anything if it’s not their favorite way to do things. it’s to the point where anything that isn’t someone’s preferred way to do something is just considered bad whether it actually is or not and people accept that view point bc anyone being uncomfortable is simply unacceptable to any degree.
Why is there insightful thoughts on my slop app GAAAA no this is actually interesting, what it means to be “American” has changed so drastically. In ww2 nationalism was used for a kindof badass and selfless rhetoric, and I’m glad that’s the stuff that sticks. I think it sadly is the outlier though. Everything after ww2, and a lot before ww2, nationalism was used to excuse and advertise imperialism. I think ww2 just happened to be a time where people actually resonated with the message long term
