Is it legal to conquer and annex a rich and strategically valuable country with lots of resources if it has slavery or other bad practices (based off your opinion) and you want to free the people and make them your own

War *should* be the absolute last resort in any situation. If there are problems with a nation and your first instinct is “I think we should bomb them and kill as many people needed until we win” then you are a bad person

Theoretically one should invade the country, abolish slavery, and then leave. in practice it’s a “no” to a country ever invading another country in general. Countries don’t do these sorts of things without ulterior motives

The verbiage you’re using makes it seem like you may continue the same practices under your own government, but maybe that’s just me?

Interesting hypothetical - sounds like piggybacking off of morality to justify material gain and strategic gain. Idk if it’s legal, but it doesn’t sound right

Like let’s say reconstruction actually worked and anti-slavery became a key value of the USA would it be justified for us to invade places that had slavery like the Caribbean countries or Brazil

“Conquer” “annex” “strategically valuable”

Well yes it’s an annexation primarily to make the resources and people of this country yours but you are planning on freeing the slaves. Is that still morally right

Maybeeee but I can’t shake the thought that you’d continue it under a similar system with a different name 😭 like how we had slavery, then sharecropping, then prison labor

War is hell and never justifiable, even if it remains an option. Institutional problems fall on the leadership of a country, but guess who is least impacted by war when it happens? War only serves to maim and kill innocent people while the leaders of both nations sit high and mighty sending thousands to their death
