I do think it’s relevant in the sense that it’s a tip off that this law isn’t coming from people who actually care about punishing rapists, but instead want to normalize capital punishment and set up networks of laws to weapons against queer people

Can you explain how this can be weaponized against queer people?

Sure! Not much time so this will be short and maybe not as clear as it could be, but in a vaccuum it’s not. It’s got to do with the fact that these laws are created by and for people who are actively aiming to redefine queerness as a sex crime, and involved in smear campaigns against queer people (mostly trans atm but it won’t stop there) as child predators. Similar things were done historically with sodomy laws that basically define any same sex activity between men as rape.

OP what is your sexual orientation. (This isn’t a gotcha, I just wanna see if it’s why you’re so paranoid)

Can give more detail later bc this was not so detailed but I hope this makes some sense? Basically the law on its own isn’t necessarily, but in a social and legal network of anti-queerness the picture becomes a lot clearer.

Right, I usually see that, but with the text of this law I’m not sure I see how it could be misconstrued and used against LGBTQ people

Not paranoia, just awareness of historically discriminatory legal frameworks and the very loud rhetoric coming from the far right these days.

Ok what’s your orientation? I think you saw how gay people were treated back in the days and think it’s history gonna repeat and it’s gonna happen again. I don’t think so. We are so much more progressive now

So keeping in mind that there are active pushes to make, for example, trans people using the bathroom that corresponds with their gender a sex crime, and that if a child is there it becomes a sex crime against a child, it becomes clearer. It’s also true that there is a long history of regular degular queer people being accused of being sex criminals because they are queer, and again that rhetoric is on the rise.

You’re correct the law in and of itself (while still problematic for other reasons Imo) isn’t anti queer. But within the current social and legislative context, and looking at how it would realistically be used in practice and the people its authors target and how, the red flags are there. Plus capital punishment always disproportionately affects marginalized people already. Happy to dm about more, you’re asking valid questions :) may be a bit before I can get back to you though.

No I think I see what you mean, and I definitely agree on the capital punishment disproportionately affecting the marginalized. The death penalty needs to be abolished

can op not just care about queer people if they happened to be straight? what happened to the concept of an ally?
