Yet we still live in the context of the ones that did- almost as if that’s the entire point

Depending on how ur looking at it. Across the US in general duh u can’t own a slave in states where it’s illegal gang. But if we look specifically at all of the southern states where it was legal roughly 25-30% of the population owned slaves and as we look at the states the percentages increase. Mississippi alone almost half the population, 49%, did own at least one slave

Breaking news: most people alive today didn’t participate in a phenomenon that happened 2-3 generations ago. Doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be talked about tho

But white people buy shit from target made by black prison laborers who got paid cents per hour in unsafe working conditions while white criminals with the same convictions got off with lesser sentencing for the same crime…

You DO realize that “back then” there weren’t even estimated to be a billion people on the planet right? Even conservative estimates don’t have the world population exceeding a billion until like 1800 AD. You see it with the lens of there being 10 billion people alive on earth and only a fraction of them being slave owners but it was a much larger problem

That’s not the point… Many impoverished people shop at target too because it’s cheap, and we should know that black people and marginalized people in general are more at risk of poverty due to settler colonialism and patriarchal capitalism.

What happened back then laid the groundwork for what’s happening right now and it installed the worldview to make that possible… Coloniality is an ongoing structure that shows up in so many aspects of our culture today.
