Every parent (if they are at all able to) should teach their kid to swim to the point where they can swim 100 yards, tread water for a few minutes, float on their back, swim on their back and be able to climb out of the side of a pool on their own.
My parents would just throw me off a bridge into fast currents and tell me there were sharks in there so I swam to the side faster

Not all people can float on their backs, certain body types just don’t allow it

I can swim pretty good though so I think it worked

It can be a very difficult task for some people. I’m a swim lesson instructor and even I can barely float on my back. However with a little bit of arm and leg movement almost anyone can be stable on their back

That’s sorta my point, I can swim on my back but I can’t float on my back, there’s just not enough fat in my legs and they sink if I’m not actively moving
