This is a random question but I see this floated and I just want to know. Who do we give land that belonged to a group that no longer exists? Tragically a significant portion of Indigenous American cultures were driven to extinction. Do we give it to the closest related neighboring group?
Look. I’m huge into indigenous history and indigenous rights, but this just isn’t practical nor ethical. There’s 300 million people here, many have been here for hundreds of years. Entire unique cultures have arose here that exist nowhere else on earth. Millions of people come from ancestors who didn’t even come here willingly.
The same way I believe no one in Palestine should be displaced over a 2,000 year old land claim applies here too. I support land back to a degree. Reservations can be expanded where possible. Indigenous land management can be cooperatively extended into federal lands like what they’re doing in Australia. But we cannot displace someone from their homes based on how their ancestors got here 200 years ago.
Where is an African American supposed to go? They didn’t ask to be here. Why must they be displaced from their homes for a crime they did not commit, nor did their ancestors commit? What fault did Jewish refugees fleeing imminent death in Europe commit? Why should a random person in Minnesota be punished for the crimes of their fathers?
