Sure, but what you’re proposing would exclude huge swathes of the populus from ever getting elected

Such as everyone who doesn’t want to be in the military? Hello?

Commander in chief is one of the main powers of presidency. If you don’t want to be in the military you don’t want to be in charge of the position

This is literally what advisors are for. Making the US more militaristic than it already is ain’t the answer

The position gives them access to every branch of the military. If you want to run the military you need to have been in the military. I also think every president should have had to work a blue collared job.

If somebody wants to run the country they need to have struggled and served. It’s part of the job. You can’t just go into a job without training

Should they have been farmers and teachers and lawyers and diplomats (etc) because they also get to run those branches?

Their roles aren’t as direct in those branches as they are in military branches which is why Donald is actively abusing those powers. Presidents should have to work a year in a blue collared job making minimum wage and have a legal oriented career.

So only ex-military lawyers (or military lawyers, I guess) who’ve worked minimum wage? You’re basically advocating to make being the president a stratocratic position

Veterans who have served in the military who have studied the legal system and have experienced being poor would be good candidates because those are some of the major demographics who are getting bent over and screwed in the ass rn

I don’t even disagree with that, but making it *required* is dumb

Vietnam was a terrible war and I can’t blame the man for noping out (my opinions of him aside). Making the office of President more exclusive than it already is will not help America move forward

I agree vietnam was a terrible war and I would have done the same thing too which is why I would not be a good fit for president either. If you want to have the power of the military and power of the economy you need to have sat in a chair outside of your penthouse office. I agree the presidential position is exclusive and quite frankly it should be more exclsuive so we dont have cutthroat billionaires deploying the military on people exercising their first amendment rights

Let’s say your proposed changes go through. The people with enough money to buy elections are gonna find someone who’ll play ball with them and dump money into their campaign. I’m really not sure what you think this would accomplish

I also think all campaigns should be given the same amount of money.
