Because there was no competition against American imperialism anymore. Our government was worried about open revolt, because the USSR showed the world it was possible. Same reason most western nations despise China. They’re doing things differently

I do—you’ve just been programmed to hate the USSR and love America; it’s the only way you could seriously posit “Soviet Imperialism” as equal in scale or goal to American Imperialism

Or alternatively I’ve read plenty about both countries and I have family that were victims of soviet imperialism. Give yourself credit for propagandizing yourself. Pro-American propaganda is not the only kind available.
