
I think an important caveat is that this primarily would benefit people in high population areas. Like what good is having a 1.3 million capacity subway line if you’re only having 30,000 passengers per year? Not that it’s not a worthwhile investment, it is, but it’s one that serves a very specific proportion of the population
I think trains should only be used as cargo haulers instead of transportation because they are the most efficient transport by the metric of (weight hauled * distance traveled) / (energy spent * time spent). High mileage EVs, when at full weight capacity, are #2 on this list and that's what people should use.
I mean commuter trains between cities are really good too. Like you’ll have ppl from Baltimore working in DC, people in Fort Worth working in Dallas, etc. having a commuter/passenger train for routes like that is good. It’s not necessarily ideal to connect like market street to 53rd yk
