I mean, it was, if you got hitched to someone and they turned abusive, you’d be treated like a pariah if you sought a divorce. Women would be sent off to mental institutions by their husbands for feeling depressed. You people only live for optics.

And it’s not like this image was ever an accurate standard for family life in the 40’s and 50’s anyways. It’s an artificially tailored campaign that companies used to sell soda and kitchenware and fancy new cars.
