it’s fascinating how people seem to think the vp slot on a ticket is just for funsies😭this is basic civics but since yall need a refresher: the main function of a vice president (or vp candidate) is to take over when the top dog is no longer able to lead
And the Harris-Walz got 0

nope. the main responsibility of the vice president is to oversee the senate. filling in for the president is secondary and rare

They’re both roles of the vice president.

yeah they’re both roles of the VP but 1) OP said that it’s the main function and 2) i don’t know of a single person who voted for biden in 2020 specifically because kamala may become president

The main function is subjective I guess it’s mentioned first in the constitution. That’s probably bc the constitution talks about the legislative first, so it would make sense they would talk about the Vice President in that role first.

You don’t have to? That’s the implication of a Vice President.

1) it objectively is the main function for the vice presidency as an institution. 2) i didn’t argue that and ur statement doesn’t negate that a primary functional role of a vp is to take over for the president

the constitution isn’t the only arbiter of reality and truth. every political position has effective power and roles outside of what’s narrowly defined in the constitution. the bully pulpit or the presidents status as the leader of their political party isn’t outlined in the constitution, but those powers still exist

You can make a stronger argument that the “main role” (depending how you’re defining that or what that even means) is to take over if something happens to the President.

well also 50 vice presidents have overseen the senate and 8 have had to fill in for the president upon death and one upon resignation. saying that the main function of the VP is filling in for the president is just plain false.

It depends what you mean by “main function” like I said if you mean more likely to happen then I guess that’s true.

But do see the semantics of this? It’s like saying the main role of the president is to be leader of the party over being commander and chief bc conflict doesn’t happen as often.

here’s what i’ll say. when historians look back on the biden era and specifically kamala harris as a historical figure, there will be much more emphasis placed on her taking over for biden than anything she did while presiding over the senate, especially when you consider that any tie breaking vote she cast would’ve been mostly for policies that have been since overturned or not implemented by the executive branch

and her case being “rare” doesn’t negate that her most important act as vp was taking over the ticket and leadership of the party
