Hot take but there needs to be more restrictions on student loans. We don’t live in a society anymore where a degree guarantees a great life, and it creates perverse incentives for colleges to be weak degree mills and hike costs because the gov is paying

I actually almost agree with this, but I think it could only work in tandem with heavy tuition subsidy for state universities where the actual degree programs can be held to a higher standard either way education should be divorced from profit

Like I’m sorry but the federal government should not be footing $50k a year for some kid to go study art history when they will never be able to pay it back. Yes, we should probably foot 50k a year for the kids who study art history at Harvard, but not for a tier 3 regional for-profit university, there needs to be restrictions

yeah, banks are incredibly predatory when it comes to loans. #a degree should be paid for by the state

I agree completely, I just think so many education businesses have taken advantage of the federal government being a captive payor, like textbooks where the material hasn’t changed in 200 years don’t need to be refreshed every 2 years and sold for $400 a pop

And we need to stop blaming the textbook manufacturers for maximizing profits when we are the ret*rds who enable it

I support textbook price negotiation and price caps, similar to drugs. It’s literally just pieces of paper put together.

It’s not even the banks fault. 92% of student loans are federal student loans decided upon by the federal government’s criteria.

I blame them less for editions but I think something needs to be done about the “textbook and homework locked behind an online portal that goes away when the semester ends” situation, because you can’t opt out

Yeah, that’s just one specific aspect. Didn’t mean to get into weeds. In addition to textbooks there’s just so much administrative bloat in universities, it’s not like the money is actually going to research or the professors, which should be a noble profession for sure. It goes to admin and stupid non education stuff.

It’s our faults the same way the patriarchy is the fault of men. sure it isnt some random 18 year old boy but we can still blame them for it
