Reminder that this is why slavery still exists in the US. We have a prison industrial complex. So cops are incentivized to arrest lots of people, and judges are incentivized to throw them in jail for the maximum amount of time. The people who own the prisons then make more money based on how many prisoners there are. Prisoners perform slave labor to make goods and then the prisons make even more money.
Most people definitely did not and when I tell laypeople I have legal theories about how to abolish slavery without an amendment, I am consistently met with shock and confusion that slavery is still allowed in the United States. If you learned this in middle school, you were exceptionally fortunate in that regard.
what a dumbass assumption 😂 bold of you to think US public schools' curriculums universally cover the slavery exception in the constitution. you realize some people are taught the "Lost Cause" narrative - which is pseudohistorical mythology - as historical fact, right? unfortunately all your learning didn't make you any less insufferable
child abuse is normal and legal in the US. children and researchers alike make no differentiation between spanking a child and abusing them, why? because functionally there is no difference and do you really want to write a scathing response as representatives pushed for relaxed child labor laws?
my taxes already pay genocidaires and child traffickers, and they’re elected by poor sops like you. they’d pay the rapist in chief too if he actually took the salary. fortunately for you ig, he has plenty of workers beneath him to exploit, only financially though not necessarily sexually, though i’m sure he does that still too
and idc what you think. workers are entitled to living wages. knowing what you should know about the American legal system, it is deeply flawed and biased against Black people and poor people. the only reason the amendment has that exception was to continue to permit slavery to exist, even after it was allegedly abolished
and private prisons (lol) use enslaved inmate labor as a means of cutting costs, because plot twist… paying a person who cannot unionize, has no legal right to vote, and is held against their will, a sub-minimum wage is cheaper than paying a non-incarcerated worker the minimum wage
It seems we have a fundamental disagreement about criminal work and pay. Their crimes have indebted them to society, and their work is their way of repaying that debt. I believe the writers of the 13th amendment shared this view. I respect your convictions about just treatment for prisoners, but I don’t think this conversation will go anywhere productive.
I don’t know where you went to school but it was part of the American history curriculum at mine. We were tested on ts in middle school. Isn’t everyone else? Like I get it if you live in Florida, Mississippi, or Alabama, but I feel like most states probably cover this at some point
Cops and judges target minorities more frequently, and there’s more prisons in areas with more minorities. Prisons torture their prisoners, increasing the rate of recidivism. Thus, our prison industrial complex is literally modern slavery. So for-profit prisons, prison labor, police brutality, the illegality of marijuana, the cruelty of prisons, the school to prison pipeline. It’s all connected.
