There's a saying (attributed to Otto von Bismarck) that "God has a special providence for fools, drunkards, and the United States of America". It's very hard to decrease the US's real GDP/capita no matter how much a president shoots himself in the foot, although increases in the cost of living and tariffs have certainly challenged this assumption.

Well it’s also that those increases to cost of living, while obviously hurting the average American, also make the numbers on the spreadsheet go up. The GDP and stock market measure how business is doing, and business can be booming while the people aren’t necessarily doing well. So then the news reports on how good the economy is doing, but it’s really only doing good for the rich.
